Welcome to the Philmont Blog
- Posted 6/9/2020 11:35:27 AM by Dan Turner There will be a meeting of the Philmont participants (adults and scouts) at 7:00pm tonight at the Scout Lodge to discuss possible options for a replacement trip. Please bring water, a camp chair, and wear a mask. The meeting will be on the back porch before the regular scout meeting.
- Posted 6/4/2020 1:18:10 PM by Ben Harveson Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but please see note below from Philmont Scout Ranch: Dear 2020 Philmont Participants, It is with great disappointment that Philmont Scout Ranch announces the cancellation of all remaining programs for the 2020 summer season. Due to the Governors COVID-19 guidelines, and the State of New Mexico Health Departments restrictions regarding travel, our efforts to secure a portion of the summer season were denied. Mr. Harveson
- Posted 5/31/2020 11:34:47 AM by Dan Turner This is another great day for a hike. The Philmont crews will have a brief meeting outside the Scout Lodge at 2pm and head out for a hike. Please be sure to wear your hiking boots and come with a full pack. Practice time is running short as the trek is rapidly approaching. Several adults, however, will not be joining us as they are in their Wilderness First Aid course. Thanks, Mr. Turner
- Posted 5/17/2020 11:13:23 AM by Dan Turner Today is a great day to take a hike! Philmont crew practice will happen at 2pm starting from the Harry R. Male Scout Lodge. Come with your packs full and your hiking boots tied. Several adults will be in Wilderness First Aid training but we encourage everyone else to attend. Mr. T
- Posted 5/12/2020 12:32:49 AM by Dan Turner For those that were going to do the WFA training with Troop 554, they are still planning on holding that training on May 17, 24, and 31 from 1pm to 6pm. Please confirm with me ASAP. Cost is $45 and textbooks will be dropped off to your home. Remember we need 2+ adults with that training per crew. This is the best price you will find for the course. Thanks, Mr. Turner
- Posted 5/10/2020 1:51:31 PM by Dan Turner No Philmont practice hike today...unless your mom wants you out of the house for a while. If she sends you away, put your pack and hiking boots on and clock in 5 or 6 miles. Mr. Turner
- Posted 5/7/2020 10:39:05 PM by Ben Harveson Thank you to the 6 individuals that have responded to the survey. All responses have been affirmative so far. It would would be great if the rest of you could complete the survey either tonight or in the morning as I need to compile the results and forward on to Philmont. Thanks, Mr. Harveson
- Posted 5/7/2020 2:39:45 PM by Ben Harveson The leadership from Philmont Scout Ranch has asked for our help as they prepare and plan for this summer. Please take 2 minutes to click the link below, read the important information and respond to the two questions. Thank you, Mr. Harveson https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WL5XPNY
- Posted 5/3/2020 9:56:23 AM by Dan Turner For those that are able and willing, we will be having a practice hike today for our Philmont crews. We will meet at the Scout Lodge at 2pm. If enough people show up, we will split into our two crews to keep our groups small. We will also be keeping our distance during the hike. If you have a moment, go to https://www.scouting.org/campin/virtual-5k/ and print a participant bib to wear on our hike. As usual, bring your own water, backpack, and wear your hiking boots. I would also request you wear a troop shirt of some kind, or a Scouting shirt suitable to hike in. See you at 2pm! Mr. Turner
- Posted 4/15/2020 12:21:41 PM by Dan Turner Philmont has posted an update on the summer treks - https://www.philmontscoutranch.org/coronavirus/ - Things are still a GO with a decision point on May 1st. Keep on hiking! Mr. Turner
- Posted 4/1/2020 7:38:52 PM by Dan Turner Here is a link to the latest update on the status of Philmont treks this summer.... https://www.philmontscoutranch.org/coronavirus/ The net of the message is that Philmont is still a GO at this point. Keep on hiking! Mr. Turner
- Posted 3/29/2020 1:43:08 PM by Dan Turner In the spirit of our stay home, stay safe directives, we will not have a practice hike today. I do, however, encourage everyone to hike with their families 2 to 3 times a week. I know several of you have been out because Ive seen you coming by the house or while Im out on my bike. Everyone going should be at 25 pounds in their pack. Another important thing to work on is hills, both up and down. In a pinch, stairs will work also. There are a lot of parking garages around that dont have a lot of cars on them so hike the ramps and hike the stairs on occasion too. Thanks and happy hiking, Mr. Turner
- Posted 3/22/2020 11:00:31 AM by Dan Turner Philmont trekkers, today (3/22/20) we will have a practice hike. We will follow the CDC guidelines and keep our social distance, but getting together for a purposeful hike is something many of us need after a long week of rain and staying at home. This is not mandatory, but I would encourage you to attend. If you are sick, have been sick, or have a sick family member at home with you, please skip this hike and get out on your own. We will not have access to the Scout Lodge so bring your own water and take care of business before you arrive. To keep our numbers smaller, we will split into the two crews (depending on the number of people attending today). Please leave your pets at home - they will not be allowed on the hike today or going forward. Wear your hiking boots and backpacks. See you at 2pm. Mr. Turner
- Posted 3/13/2020 9:24:01 AM by Dan Turner A Philmont payment is due for those attending. To see your outstanding balance, go to the Troop website (http://www.troop17.net) and click on the MEMBERS link at the top of the page. Once logged in, click on the reports icon, then My Finances. This will show your accounts. To show the rest of your family, click the show family link at the top center of the page. At this point, everyone should be at a balance of $250. If you have a larger balance, please make a payment to bring your amount due to $250. The final payment to bring your balance to zero will be due June 1st. Payments can be made at any meeting or mailed to Mr. Peterson, the troop treasurer. If you have any difficulty accessing your balance or cannot see your family, please let me know. Thanks! Mr. Turner

- Posted 3/7/2020 9:33:01 PM by Dan Turner Tomorrow we will have our Philmont practice hike at 2pm. If you are out of town for Spring Break and will not be attending, please drop a quick note to scoutmaster@troop17.net so we do not wait for you. If you are attending, please be sure you wear your hiking boots. Mr. Turner

- Posted 2/19/2020 8:53:58 AM by Dan Turner One thing I forgot to announce last night was the itinerary confirmations... Crew 709-U-01 (Adviser-Harveson) has been confirmed for itinerary #12-10. Crew 709-U-02 (Adviser-Virden) has been confirmed for itinerary #12-5. No practice this Sunday due to the campout. Mr. T
- Posted 2/16/2020 6:31:03 PM by Dan Turner It was perfect weather for hiking today! Thanks to everyone that came out with us. I took a few questions today and thought I would post the answers for everyone to see. #1 - What is the average number of miles we will hike a day? Looking at the treks that the crews have selected, the average daily hike is just over 5 miles. On one of the treks, the last day is a 10 mile hike so be prepared for that! Remember that this will be at 6,500+ feet also. #2 - What is the average pack weight? This one is open to interpretation so I went back to the official Philmont documentation, the Guidebook to Adventure. You should plan on having a pack that is up to 1/3 of your body weight. In general, the loaded pack should weight 20-25 pounds without food and water. #3 - What kinds of footwear are acceptable? Philmont says "High quality hiking boots that are broken-in are required for the trails (and horse and ATV programs) at Philmont. Your trek will cover uneven rocky surfaces and steep trails. Hiking boots that fit properly and are broken in will prevent injury." Additionally, Philmont says that footwear is... "Well broken in durable boots. Trail runners are accepted but ankle support is highly recommended." Our opinion is that over the ankle boots are a must and should be well broken in by the time you arrive. An additional pair of lightweight camp shoes are also crucial (in our opinion). Philmont says "You will also need a pair of sturdy lightweight, closed toe shoes for use around camp and occasionally when hiking without your pack. These will also be used when rock climbing, biking, and potentially crossing streams. Sandals are not recommended but can be used in campsites only." ***Everyone should be wearing their boots to our practice hikes. Most of the scouts did not have their boots on today. Please be sure you have your gear on at every practice! Thanks, Mr. Turner

- Posted 9/24/2019 6:06:34 PM by Ben Harveson Welcome to the Philmont 2020 Blog! I intend to use this blog for the majority of the communication leading up to our trip in July. Below is an email that I sent last night to those that have signed up to go on the trip. More info to come soon. Good Evening- You are receiving this email because you have courageously agreed to join Troop 17 for the Philmont Trek in July of 2020. Congratulations and thank you for committing to this transformative trek! It is time for the Troop to make the next payment for this adventure. The total trip cost is $1100 per person. This amount will cover all food, lodging and transportation for the entire trip. When we last met you gave the nonrefundable amount of $100 to secure your spot on this journey. Now we require the second nonrefundable installment of $500 per person attending. The final nonrefundable (notice the nonrefundable theme?) payment of $500 per person will be due February 15th 2020. We have 12 scouts and 8 adults that have committed to this trip. We have room to add 4 scouts if they are of age and rank. Additionally we have a couple of adults that would like to join if any of the adults that are signed up need to back out. Please let me know ASAP if you have a conflict or reason that you cannot join us on this trip and I will try to help you mitigate any monies that you have committed to paying. Please make your checks payable to Troop 17. This will be a once in a lifetime excursion and I am so happy that you will be a part of it! Thank you! Mr. Harveson

- Posted 6/27/2018 6:18:04 PM by Ben Harveson During our gear check on Sunday we will cover your tent/tent plan. Everyone needs to have a tent mate picked out and a bring your lightweight 2-man tent to the meeting. Two people per tent. For our through hike and mountain ascents one person will carry the tent and the other will carry the bear canister with food and smell-ables. Scouts please work on this now and come to the meeting on Sunday knowing who your partner is and have the tent with you that you plan to take. Thank you. Mr. Harveson
- Posted 6/26/2018 12:31:16 PM by Ben Harveson We will meet this Sunday at 2pm for a gear check. This is a mandatory meeting for all those going on our revised trip. At this meeting we will be do a shake down of everything that you are bringing on our trip. So bring your backpack fully packed with all of your gear. We are still using the Philmont Gear List as our guide for what to pack for our trip. Refer to pages 20 thru 23 in the Philmont 2018 Guidebook to Adventure for the equipment list. We will also be handing out another short list of items to pack during the meeting. This list will include additional items necessary for white water rafting an other activities that are on our modified itinerary. Thank you. Mr. Harveson

- Posted 6/9/2018 11:22:04 PM by Ben Harveson UPDATE--ACTION REQUIRED--I received a call today from Philmont. They offered an alternate weekend for our trek. Unfortunately it does not work for the adult advisors that have signed up to drive and support our scouts for this years trip. Philmont offered a refund and I accepted. Our Philmont trip will not happen in 2018. We have already put a request in to try again for 2019. More on that later. Prior to this call I met with the troop committee and the adult advisors for our trek on Wednesday to discuss other alternatives for this year. I think we have come up with a super Plan B. We intend to take a trip that will have us travel on the same days, spend the same amount of money (or possibly less) and camp and backpack in the mountains of Colorado. We need to discuss this ASAP as group and make our new plan. Therefore I am calling a MANDATORY MEETING on TUESDAY at 6:45 before our weekly 7:30 troop meeting. All scouts and at least one parent need to come to this meeting. See you Tuesday. Thank You. Mr. Harveson 817.320.6700
- Posted 6/4/2018 7:37:17 PM by Ben Harveson All- Please see the announcement that just came down from Philmont Scout Ranch: PHILMONT PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT - UTE PARK FIRE 6/4/18 4:00 MDT The safety of our youth participants, volunteers and staff is a priority for everybody at Philmont Scout Ranch and the Boy Scouts of America. While efforts continue to extinguish the fire currently burning in the back-country, the anticipated damage and inability to access the affected areas makes it currently impossible to host back country programs. Until the fire is extinguished, the areas are inspected and the damage assessed, it is impossible to definitively state when those programs will resume. At this time, we have made the difficult decision to cancel all backcountry treks that were scheduled to take place in the Philmont backcountry from June 8 July 14, 2018. We hope that back country treks may resume after July 14, 2018 with altered itineraries, assuming the back country is safe and infrastructure is restored. Additionally, programs scheduled to take place at Philmont Training Center will also be canceled through June 23, 2018. The Philmont Training Center expects to welcome back participants beginning with Philmont Family Adventure on June 24, 2018. The NAYLE program, which takes place at Rayado Ridge Leadership Camp seven miles south of the Philmont Base Camp and is unaffected by the Ute Park Fire, will go on as scheduled. Over the next few days, we will be contacting the lead advisor or contingent leader of all crews that are impacted by this decision, starting with those that are scheduled to arrive first, as well as affected PTC coordinators. Thank you in advance for allowing the Philmont team to contact your crew your assistance will help make sure that Philmont phone lines remain open. We will continue to work with local, state and federal authorities to continuously evaluate the fire and air quality to ensure that we can safely deliver outstanding program. Thank you for your support and patience. End Philmont Message This is bad news for the Troop 17 Trek that is supposed to start on July 12. When the Philmont staff calls me in the next couple of days I will check with them to see if a later date is available. If there not a later date that works for us and them I will be asking about a refund. At that point we will start to explore other options for Troop 17 during the original dates of July 12 through July 23. I will let you know as soon as I have additional information. Feel free to call me if you have any questions. Thanks Mr. Harveson
- Posted 6/2/2018 10:49:51 PM by Ben Harveson We will meet again tomorrow for a training hike. Lets plan on meeting at 2 and being done by 4. It will be hot so make sure you have plenty of water and are dressed for the heat, including a head covering. Oh yeah...dont forget your fully loaded backpacks. Good news is that the high tomorrow is only 95! As you may have heard there are fires burning in northern New Mexico right now. These fires include parts of Philmont. At this time we will continue train and prepare as if our itinerary is not affected by the wildfires. See you tomorrow. Mr Harveson. 817.320.6700
- Posted 6/1/2018 5:50:14 PM by Dan Turner Just a reminder for those that are not going to WR this summer, but are going to Philmont...including the adults - everyone must have a medical form, including the signature from a physician, completed since August 1st, 2017 (roughly 12 months prior to the trip). Be sure that you are using the correct form - it is available at https://filestore.scouting.org/filestore/HealthSafety/pdf/680-001_philmont.pdf This includes the high adventure advisories. The BSA will not accept any other forms.

Pack as much of your actual gear as possible and then add extra weight if needed to get to the 40# range for Scouts and 50# range for adults. We are 74 days away from our departure. Everyone needs to be attending the practice hikes every week so that we can prepare as a team. See you tomorrow. Mr. Harveson 817-320-6700

- Posted 3/11/2018 2:40:58 PM by Dan Turner FINAL REMINDER - All participants interested in going to Philmont in 2018 should have paid the Troop their $250 deposit already. Tuesday, March 11th will be the final day to turn in the deposit. All participants selected to go on the trip will then owe an additional $250 on April 3rd. Anyone not selected for the 2018 trip will have their deposit returned. The Troop has committed and paid for all participants to attend already. Anyone paying a deposit for the trip is committing to the full cost of the trip (approximately $1,000). Unfortunately, all fees paid to Philmont are non-refundable and the Troop will require full payment even if the participant backs out of the trip. Mr. Turner

One important thing to review is the available programs during the trek. We will discuss the treks at the meeting on Tuesday. Your Philmont experience is not about how many miles you hiked, it is about what you did while you were there. - Posted 2/24/2018 1:34:42 PM by Ben Harveson Philmont Prep PLEASE READ ALL OF THIS EMAIL If you are on the 2018 Philmont Request List (that includes YOU if you are receiving this email) you must do the following in order to be a part of the 2018 Philmont Trek: (1) pay the deposit and (2) consistently train with the group on Sundays. We are training now to make our time at Philmont more enjoyable and rewarding, both as individuals and as a group. The happiness, health, and safety of the trekking crew can be directly linked to proper training and preparation. Just as payment is not optional, training is not optional. We will meet again this Sunday at 2pm to continue our training. This week please add another 10 pounds to your backpack for a total of 30 pounds. We will continue to add weight every 4 weeks or so. We will also continue to add distance and elevation/terrain changes to our hikes. By June our packs will be in the 50 pound range and our training hikes will be the 8 mile range. You will be glad you put in the time and effort come mid-July when we are half-way through our trek, cruising up and down the rugged Philmont trails with ease, while other crews are gasping for air. The 2018 T17 trekking crew will be a lean mean hiking machine. Thank you. Questions or concerns? Contact me. Mr. Harveson bharveson@icloud.com 817.320.6700

Please check the weather before you come because this will be a hot or cold, rain or shine event. Please wear or bring the clothing or gear that you need to keep you warm, dry and happy. There are many subjects that we need to review and cover as we get ready for this trip. The item of highest importance today is physical preparedness. The Philmont experience will include 10 days of backpacking that will span 55-75 miles while carrying 35-55 pounds of gear in your backpack. In order to prepare for this we must began a weekly training program right away. We will start training this Sunday January 21. We will meet at the scout lodge in the afternoon and hike the area for 1-2 hours this week. I will get back with you tomorrow with the specific time and what to wear and bring. Thank you, Mr. Harveson bharveson@icloud.com 817.320.6700
- Posted 8/12/2016 7:31:21 AM by Dan Turner Just a reminder that we are collecting pictures and crew gear at the next Troop meeting. If you have pictures, please bring them on a CD/DVD or a USB capable device (bring your USB cord). There are pictures already uploaded to the troop website. We are also looking for troop gear that may have gone with you to Philmont including stoves, collapsible water bottles and first aid kits. Thanks, Mr. Turner
- Posted 8/8/2016 12:11:14 PM by Dan Turner Hopefully by now you have gotten all your Philmont gear cleaned and packed away. If you have done that already, then you may have discovered you have some Troop or other gear left over. If you can bring that to the Scout Lodge tomorrow (at 2pm or around 8pm), we would like to get things "back to normal" and ready for the fall camping season. See you tomorrow, Mr. Turner
- Posted 7/13/2016 8:39:39 AM by Bill Peterson Less than 24 hours! Tonight after you have checked your gear for the very last time, roll it up tight and have it ready by the front door. Some hikers will need to diet to lose the extra weight. Create a food plan based upon calories. Multiply your current weight by 10. This will give the total daily calories required to lose a half-pound to a pound a week (weight loss faster than this recommended limit is unhealthy). The food plan should be based upon the 3-0-1 concept of eating - three meals a day, zero snacks, and take it one day at a time. -Mr. Peterson
- Posted 4/15/2016 8:58:49 AM by Bill Peterson IT is a Troop Campout weekend! So there will be NO Troop practice hike. Tick...Tock 12 weeks until Philmont. IF YOU ARE CAMPING; please bring your Philmont boots and Backpack. Not sure of what the program is yet, but we may be able to squeeze in a couple practice hikes up Kyle Mountain. - Mr. Peterson

- Posted 4/6/2016 9:05:27 PM by Dan Turner Hey Philmonteers - please work with your crew to design a crew shirt for your Philmont trek. The only design criteria that I would offer is that you do not include the crew member names on the shirt. Ten times out of ten, someone does not make it to Philmont when the names are on the shirt. Mr. Roger Smith can provide some design assistance also. Mr. Turner
- Posted 4/4/2016 9:08:20 AM by Bill Peterson We had great weather and a great turnout for the hike yesterday. TCU stadium in the spring, is a pleasent place to practice. A couple things to note on clothing for Philmont; It is important to layer your clothing, combining different garments to achieve protection from the elements. AVOID all cottons! Synthetic or wool layers are recommended as they wick away perspiration and cool you off faster. More importantly they insulate you, even when wet. -Mr. Peterson
- Posted 4/4/2016 8:56:35 AM by Dan Turner FOR EVERY 2016 PARTICIPANT, I need your approximate height and weight. If you will be at Scouts on Tuesday, you can tell me then. If you will not be there, please email me your information today. Adults, I need yours also. Thanks, Mr. Turner

We will start at the Scout Lodge, hike 6 miles and climb lots of stairs. Wear your boots, Backpack, 35lbs of gear and appropriate clothing. See you there. -Mr. Peterson
- Posted 3/28/2016 4:52:01 PM by Bill Peterson Interesting facts...Fort Worth is 653 feet above sea level, Philmont Base camp is 6,539 feet, the Tooth of Time is 9,003 feet, AND Mount Baldy is 12,441 feet.
- Posted 3/24/2016 1:16:10 PM by Bill Peterson Next Sunday is Easter! So, once again there will be NO Troop practice hike. Stay away from the chocolate bunnys and plan on hiking at least 10 miles on your own this week. Wear your boots, Backpack, 30lbs of gear and appropriate clothing. - Mr. Peterson
- Posted 3/21/2016 11:38:00 AM by Bill Peterson It is probably impossible to overtrain for Philmont, provided that you do not injure yourself. Adults will, in most cases, need more physical preparation than the scout crew members will. So if you keep finding reasons for not exercising on a regular basis, you are going to find yourself being your crews weakest link.
- Posted 3/18/2016 12:26:35 PM by Bill Peterson Its a camp out weekend! So there will be NO Troop practice hike this week, but keep up your personal training. - Mr. Peterson
- Posted 3/11/2016 5:39:27 PM by Bill Peterson It is ONLY 17 weeks until Philmont!... There will be NO organized practice this week because of spring break. - Posted 2/21/2016 10:11:46 AM by Bill Peterson No Hike today, but everyone needs to try to hike 5-7 miles on their own this week. Philmont Rangers say that based on their experience, 80% of the adult advisors coming to Philmont are not adequately prepared for the physical demands of the backcountry. But not Troop 17. -Mr Peterson

- Posted 2/8/2016 9:25:46 AM by Bill Peterson Most of the gear that is required for Philmont can be purchased at stores like REI and Backwoods. My favorite online store is Campmor.com. But there are alternatives to buying. We do have some gear that has been donated to the troop. I also own several packs that I will to loan out. Lastly, Philmont has tents and backpacks that they rent for a small charge. No group practice this week, because we have a Backpacking campout. Please make plans to go. -Mr. Peterson

- Posted 2/1/2016 9:25:09 AM by Bill Peterson We had a great hike on Sunday! Dont know about you, but I am feeling those stairs today Hopefully you have purchased your hiking boots and socks. Now is the time to start looking at backpacks. We highly recommend and the internal frame type vs. the external frame. The minimum size for a Philmont trek should be no less than 4800 cubic inches (79 liters). 5000 to 5200 (82-85 liters) is-even-more-better. Mr. Peterson

- Posted 1/19/2016 9:21:01 AM by Bill Peterson To enjoy the Philmont experience, participants must be physically prepared to carry a 40-50 pound pack over steep, rocky trails at elevations ranging from 6,500 feet to 12,500 feet. A regular program of physical conditioning for at least six months prior to taking a trek is essential. So with that in mind, the first Troop 17 practice hike will take place this Sunday (Jan 24) at 1:00pm. We will start at the Scout Lodge and hike 3 miles. Wear your boots, daypack and appropriate clothing. See you there. Mr. Peterson
- Posted 12/28/2015 8:59:06 AM by Dan Turner This a great trip. Pay attention to the buy the boot slightly larger comment. I did not do this and on Day #6 my toes hit the front of my boot. At the end of the trip I had 3 black toe nails and lost them a few days later. Had I purchased 1/2 size larger this more than likely would not have been a problem. It was literally the only physical trouble I had on the trip. If you think you may have altitude problems let me know or Jim Marshall and there is a med you can take (Jim and I did) that will solve that issue. It is a prescription and your personal Dr. will have to fill it. On 2 nights you will be sleeping at 10,500 and the highest climb is 12.400. -John Key
- Posted 12/27/2015 8:41:54 AM by Bill Peterson Happy New Year Troop 17! Those who are prepping for Philmont, there are two things that you will need to purchase in the next month. First you will need to get three pair of good hiking socks. The main thing is that these socks are made with Smart wool or Marino wool. Whether to use Liner-socks or not seems to be a personal preference with hikers, so I will leave it at that (I dont hike with them). Just no cotton tube socks! They will chew your feet up. Next you will need a good pair of hiking boots. The most important thing that you need to keep in mind is that during your Philmont trek your feet will swell. So your boot needs to be larger than you would normally wear. The PDF below has some great advice on how to find the right size of boots for your foot. https://www.nols.edu/nolspro/pdf/boot_fitting_info.pdf Of course the salespeople at Backwoods or REI can also expertly fit your feet. All the stores seem to have sales right now. FYI, For anyone looking for experienced hiking boots. I have about six pair of hiking boots from former Troop 17 scouts, for the taking. I will bring them to the January meetings. -Mr. Peterson

- Posted 12/24/2015 12:13:22 PM by Dan Turner In just over 6 months, we will be on the trail in the back country in Philmont! I cannot stress this enough - take advantage of the fabulous weather we are having and GET OUTSIDE and HIKE. Everyones trip will be a much better experience if you are preparing NOW. Mr. Peterson has volunteered to help coordinate a group training program. We will have a meeting to go over the program shortly (stay tuned). FOR ADULTS, we need everyone to take the Wilderness First Aid course. It will be available from a local scouter and several others in the area. The calendar for the public courses can be found at https://www.nols.edu/portal/wmi/courses/wfa/tx/. This is a great course for anyone, not just adults or those going to Philmont. Again, take advantage of the great hiking weather and go easy on the desserts this week! See you outside, Mr. Turner

- Posted 10/6/2015 4:37:45 PM by Dan Turner I should also clarify that some of you are subscribed to this blog based on your previous attendance at Philmont. The OF on this list also have permission to post updates. If you wish to no longer receive these updates, you can unsubscribe yourself at the Troop website. Happy hiking! Mr. T.
- Posted 10/6/2015 3:37:08 PM by Dan Turner Welcome to the Philmont Prep blog. You may have recently been subscribed to this blog based on your registration for the upcoming trip in 2016. At this point, you have done the first tough thing - paid money to attend. Now the real work begins. This event will be one of the most strenuous weeks you have ever spent. My advice for you is that no matter how well you think you are prepared, you could still be in better physical shape. Here is an excerpt from the Philmont Guidebook to Adventure... A Philmont trek is physically demanding. Even if you are able to pass a physical examination with flying colors, you will need to get in shape for Philmont. Steep, rocky trails with 1,000-foot climbs are typical. Also, there is 20- to 35-percent less oxygen at Philmont elevations than at sea level. And remember, you will be carrying a pack that weighs 35 to 50 pounds. Breathing will be labored, especially at the start of your trek. A program of regular aerobic exercise that begins six months or more before you come to Philmont is highly recommended. Exercise for at least 30 minutes 3 to 4 times a week at an intensity that boosts your heart rate about 75% of your maximum. An average maximum heart rate is 220 minus your age. If you are older than 40, or have not been very active, consult your doctor before beginning an exercise program. Jogging, hiking uphill or up long flights of stairs, and hiking with a full pack are excellent preparation. Other aerobic exercises such as swimming, bicycling, and aerobic exercise classes can be used to supplement your training. Start slowly and gradually increase the duration of your exercise. Exercise individually or with other members of your crew. Set aside regular periods of time to do it. Plan to be in top physical shape when you arrive at Philmont. You will enjoy your experience more and be less likely to have a medical problem. Wear the boots you will be bringing to Philmont. Philmont suggests that you maintain a fitness log of all physical activities. This will help you stay focused and provide a way to monitor your progress. By comparing information from your log with other members of the crew, you will be able to encourage each other to physically prepare for the adventure. We will have several practice hikes, but preparation is UP TO YOU. We are now just 9 months from our adventure. The weather has turned perfect for walking, climbing, cycling, and hiking outdoors. Take advantage of it! Please take us seriously when we say that preparation must begin now. The better shape you are in, the more you will enjoy your adventure. Thanks, Mr. Turner

It is at 50% containment and they are hoping to be at 70% by the end of the day. Lets keep our fingers crossed.

- Posted 5/1/2011 7:27:05 PM by David Taylor Mandatory Philmont gear check on Thursday, May 12 at 7 p.m. Either at scout lodge or church. Gear list will be handed out before hand at scout meeting. Come packed as is if you are ready to go. The purpose is to see what you do have and what you do not have.
- Posted 4/12/2011 1:17:27 PM by David Taylor By tomorrow morning, Wednesday, we should know the respective trek for each crew. There was a computer glitch that caused problems last week. As Philmont gets closer, it would be appropriate to pick a Saturday to have a gear check. Number and weight of items are crucial. Just like those who went to Kandersteg last summer, everyone would be expected to pack their backpacks as if they were ready to go. Each perons equipment will be inspected for what is there and what is missing. The sooner that we do this the more time that everyone will have time to make additions (purchases) or deletions. Possible dates: Saturday, April 16 (probably too soon) Saturday, April 23 Easter weekend Saturday, April 30 Campout weekend Saturday, May 7 This might be the best day. More information to come. I will have extra gear sheets available at the scout meeting
- Posted 3/11/2011 8:44:49 AM by David Taylor Crew B has made their trek selections. #1-Trek 19; #2-Trek 14; #3-Trek 10. I will distribute summaries of each trek at the next scout meeting. Crew A has chosen Trek #27. They still need to make a second and a third choice. I will have summaries available of these treks, too.
- Posted 3/6/2011 10:12:30 PM by David Taylor Crew B Members-As mentioned in a separate email, I want to invite our crew of scouts to my house on Thursday, March 10 at 7 p.m. to make our trek selections. Please call or see me at Tuesdays scout meeting. See email for my cell and address.
- Posted 3/2/2011 6:57:50 AM by Alvin Mathe I need the physical exam form Im not able to find it on the Longhorn Council site and the Philmont site says they will be mailed to the group. Maybe someone can bring more to a meeting or committee meeting?
- Posted 2/26/2011 4:35:43 PM by David Taylor Trek selection is due to Mr. Smith by March 14. Mr. Turner has asked me to help in the selection process. I believe that Crew A has made their choice. TThree choices need to be made along with electing a crew leader. Crew B still needs to do so. I have handed out a spreadsheet that outlines all of the treks and and the programs that are included on each. I will bring more to the meeting on Tuesday. I would like to invite the members of Crew B over to my house on Thursday, March 10 around 7 pm. to work on treks. I know that this may not work for everyone. Please let me know. - Posted 2/26/2011 4:03:03 PM by Alvin Mathe Noah and I did did some get in shape, bootcamp style exercises on Thursday 2/24/2011 around the scout hut. We found that around the scout hut and St. Stephens are many things to help get in shape such as stairs and hills and flat areas for a group to work out. So we are ready to start the Philmont boot camp on Thursday March 3rd at 7 pm. Come dressed for running and working out. Bring a towel to kneel or lie on and bring two nalgenes full of water.

We are about 84 hours away from departing on our Colorado Adventure. Mr. Lasater, Mr. Towle and I are excited and hope your sons are as well. I believe we have a great trip planned.
We will pack all troop gear into the trailer on Tuesday night during the regular scout meeting and personal gear early Wednesday morning before hitting the road.
Backpack and Bag:
Everyone needs to bring two packed bags on Wednesday morning. One bag is the backpack that you will be taking on our hike. This is the one we just went through last Sunday during our gear check. Please make sure you have all of the gear from that gear check plus anything that you were missing last week. The second bag should be a medium to large duffel bag with another set of clothes and personal gear to use and wear while we are traveling in the cars to and from Fort Worth. Think deodorant, clean t-shirt and underwear, tennis shoes, phone charger, etc. in the second bag.
White Water Rafting:
We will be going rafting on Friday. The rafting company recommends that you wear/bring:
Bathing suit, non-cotton T-shirt and shorts, hat, sunglasses/strap, sunscreen, water shoes or old tennis shoes. Paddle jackets and paddle pants will be provided at no charge. Neoprene booties ($3.00) and wetsuits ($8.00) are available to rent. Remember your sunscreen and drinking water!
I believe you have most everything you need from this list already. Just add a bathing suit and some Keens if you have them and want them. Remember, no open-toed shoes, ever.
